Inspired vs Copied

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery they say. Some agree, some don’t. But my issue here is defining the difference between taking inspiration from something and copying.

I’ve filled this blog post with photographs I have with people that inspire me constantly, if you spot yourself, I love you and thank you for making me happy.

‘Inspiration’

noun

  1. The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.

Some things can be ‘copied’ and it be acceptable; hair colours or styles or clothing as these are limited things created for the masses. There are only a finite amount of colours that hair can be, yours is going to be the same as somebodies. Clothes are manufactured to be bought by anybody, if you see someone in the street wearing the same Primark skirt as you, they didn’t copy you.

But when is it acceptable to be annoyed? If you think someone is copying your style, your hair cut, your makeup, chances are that you copied it (or took inspiration) from somebody else in the first place.

For example, when I dyed my hair ginger and cut it into a bob I saw a lot of other girls doing the same thing. I’m not mad about it, it’s a great colour and style. I copied it from my mum anyway! Or was I inspired by her? It’s all on a giant scale…

I’d find it ridiculous if someone accused me of copying their hair or piercing cause THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY HAIR STYLES AND PIERCINGS TO GO AROUND! You may have changed your hair or gotten a piercing because you’ve seen it on a person you admire or you liked the way it looks.

My defining difference between inspiration and copying is when it’s creativity that’s duplicated.

‘Copy’

verb

1.Make a similar or identical version of; reproduce.

2. Imitate the style or behaviour of.

The best example I can think of to emphasise my point is the discussion of tattoo stealing. I’ve been planning and researching this topic for a blog post and/or a YouTube video as I have a lot of thoughts on this topic so I’ll just touch lightly on the subject here.

You have the deathly hallows tattoo from Harry Potter? That’s copied, but it’s okay. You took a photo of someone else’s tattoo to an artist to get a replica of? Is that okay?

I’ll use myself as an example, I have an Alice in Wonderland piece covering both my feet and ankles. If I saw someone else with an Alice in Wonderland tattoo could I accuse them of copying me? OF COURSE NOT! But, if they had taken a photo of my exact tattoo to an artist and asked them for the exact same thing in the exact same place, that’s copying and down right disrespectful.

My tattoo artist worked HARD for HOURS blessing my footsies with the beautiful piece that I’m proud to own, someone else ripping off that work would SUCK.

Stealing art is not cool. Whether it be a drawing, a photograph, a video, a blog post, a painting, a story, a design… I could go on forever.

When is it acceptable to be annoyed? When isn’t it? What do you guys think?

I’d love to have a discussion about this topic. Have you ever been annoyed at someone copying you? Leave a comment and let me know!

  • loved this post! I used to get so so annoyed and frustrated when some one was copying me, (i did have a girl copy everything i wore and posted on insta once but i blocked her, it’s as easy as that) but like once is fine because it’s inspirational but when it’s an ongoing thing it can be frustrating, i don’t get annoyed as much now i’m older and wiser, my mum always said imitation is a form of flattery and that’s something i always try to accept. As long as it’s inspiration they take then it’s fine, like you said there aren’t enough people to go around, lot’s of us are going to look, or have, wear, do or say the same things. When it comes to tattoos as well, i don’t think anyone should get a tattoo unless it has been designed specifically for them, yeh take inspo from other tattoos but the tattoo artist should always want to tattoo something unique anyway. πŸ™‚ and if you want something but someone go gets it first, we shouldn’t be afraid to not go get what we want just because they have it to, whether it’s clothes, hair, tattoos etc.

I’ve accepted that we should all inspire each other, hell yeah if you have that same awesome bag that i have?! awesome! Girls we should spread love not hate πŸ˜€

Great post! I love this topic πŸ™‚ xxx

    • Yes I love this comment! I was hoping it would provoke discussion and I’m so happy you dealt with your copy cat in such a good way πŸ’• xxx

      • It’s an interesting topic and we are all different anyway so we should embrace it not try be some one else πŸ™‚ Yeah i’m glad i did, and the thing is sometimes you think wow we obviously are interested in the same stuff, we could of been friends? But instead they never spoke to me and just copied and denied it. It’s sad really. But the best thing to do is ignore it and move forward πŸ™‚ πŸ’œ

        • If they’d just been all like ‘omg where did you get this I love it’ and had conversations with you about your similar interests you’d most like have become friends aye! πŸ’•

  • Oh god. I once had a girl take MY photo of my tattoo (I put it on my FB) and take it to her tattoo “artist”. She got my exact tattoo (that had been drawn and designed just for me) and then told everyone it was a generic design she found on Google! I of course knew that it wasn’t but confronted her “artist” anyway who admitted she came in with a print out of my arm. It made me feel so gross, angry and creeped out!

    • Oh my god I’d have kicked off so badly! That’s absolutely awful I’m so sorry that happened to you πŸ˜” x
